In a recent interview, I was asked: โWho or what inspires you?โ
The โwhoโ part was easy: my students, my colleagues, my partner, my family, my awesome friends.
But, the โwhatโ stuck with me. What inspires me? I kept that question with me for days. It was soย fun to think about.
What is inspiring?
Then, one day I was walking in Sugarhouse Park near my house. Blue stopped to take a drink from the creek, and I saw a leaf fall into the water and float away.
You know those moments in life where everything slows down and you notice, really notice something, and it fills you with joy?
I loved that leaf. It was beautiful. I watched it float downstream out of sight. Then, I stood there and watched leaf after leaf do the same thing: flutter down to the waterโs surface, land on top, and float away.
Itโs the end of Fall now, and all the trees are letting their leaves go. Why?
Because itโs time.
Itโs time to let go of the old things.
Often, I hold on to old things. Old pain. Old shortcomings. Old habits. Sometimes, I canโt let go of that insensitive comment that I madeย to a friend, or that time that I cut someone off in an argument, hungry to make my own point, or all those times I didn’t tellย people that I loved them.
Sometimes, I get totally overwhelmed by all the things I think I could have done better.
Today, I will be inspired by trees. Itโs time to let things go.
Leaves fly, they land, sometimes they float. They never get back on the tree. They are of the past.
Like a tree, I can let the past go. It’s time now to make room for new growth.
Hey, beautiful reader out there: What are you holding on to?
What are you willing to let go?
What inspires you?
