Having a drink with Shireen and Katie at a local bar. Guy walks up next to me and joins our conversation. We crack some “Saved By The Bell” Zach Morris and AC Slater jokes. Shireen looks over his shoulder to see that he has left his friend at a table behind us. She turns to the guy and says:
“Should we join you at your table?”
The phrase echoes in my head: Should we join you at your table?
She has just invited us to someone’s table.
I’d say I was surprised, but that would be a lie. Shireen does this all the time. She loves the promise of a conversation with pizazz. She invites herself over to your table.
Happily, the answer was yes. Predictably, we had a lot of fun talking to new people and making new friends. Always, when you follow Shireen, you end up having fun.
Yet, for me, even though I’ve been friends with this incredible woman for years, those moments scare the crap out of me: the moments of Should we join you at your table?
Eeeeeek! I am fantastic at concocting all kinds of scary rejection stories.
This is not the way Shireen thinks, which is why I love her and closely study her mindset.
After this evening, I had a debrief. I said, “So, I loved the whole, ‘Should we join you at your table?’ thing…”
She said, “Yeah! I said that.”
I said, “I’m trying to follow the way you were thinking leading up to that.”
She said, “Oh, what have you come up with? I’ll tell you exactly what I was thinking…”
I said, “You were probably thinking #1, this person is fun, #2, this could get even more fun, and #3, Who cares?”
She laughed, “EXACTLY! Opportunity for fun. And who cares?”
I said, “What if he said no?”
She said, “Then THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE TO TALK TO!”
We laughed and laughed. In reality, there were only a few dozen people there, but let’s press pause here and watch how Shireen thinks:
She thinks fun. She thinks opportunity. She thinks in HUNDREDS.
I brought this story to my classes this week, because Shireen is a very successful leader. I asked my students:
- What if you thought there were HUNDREDS of opportunities for you?
- What if you thought there were HUNDREDS of jobs?
- What if you thought there were HUNDREDS of people you can connect with?
- What if you thought there were HUNDREDS of people for you to date?
- What if you thought there were HUNDREDS of ways for you to succeed?
HUNDREDS. HUNDREDS!!!
What if you thought in HUNDREDS???
Oh, that didn’t work out? HUNDREDS more chances.
HUNDREDS.
It makes me laugh every time. My friend who thinks in HUNDREDS, even when she can’t see them. And then recently, we were talking and she said:
“Hey! How can we raise THOUSANDS of dollars for the Rape Recovery Center?”
I bet I know how she will do it: She will find HUNDREDS of donors out there. I’m gonna help.
Beautiful reader: What if there are HUNDREDS more adventures in your future? HUNDREDS more cool people you will meet? HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS more jokes for you to laugh at? HUNDREDS more chances for you to stand up for what you believe in and make changes?
What if your life holds HUNDREDS more opportunities?
That’s what the people I love think. That’s what we talk about.
